Verwüstung (Desertification)

Concrete, Sand, Sandkorn (200 x enlarged), 45 x 45 x 45 cm (2022)
Exhibited at Studio Tilman Kriesel Hamburg, from Januar 2022

The desert is spreading – due to overexploitation and man-made global warming, sand is becoming our fate. But at the same time, every grain of sand is considered a “metropolis for bacteria” (Max Planck Institute Bremen), which act on the beach as a filter for the marine ecosystem. The observation of a single grain of sand also appeared to Paulo Coelho in “The Alchemist” as a phenomenon. When it comes to the idea that the soul of the world could be found in the smallest grain of sand, he writes:

“… And that happiness can be found in a simple grain of sand in the desert…. For a grain of sand is a moment of creation, and the universe took millions of years to produce it.”
